The individual members of the group have worked together in different capacities over the years. Bates and Hagedorn’s Good Vibes Trio records and performs regularly around the Cities. Bates and Squinobal have collaborated frequently on performances at the University of Minnesota Morris, where Squinobal directs the jazz ensembles and produces the annual UMM Jazz Fest. The Quartet’s performance at Studio Z this past July marked the first time Squinobal, Bates, and Hagedorn, (along with drummer JT Bates) teamed up to perform as a group. On the 13th, Cory Healey will join the group to provide his unique mixture of rhythmic grooves and textures. Each member of the group is well-versed in the rich tradition of improvised music; this experience is made evident by the level of communication the group performs with. While each musician is a master soloist, the music is never about the individuals, it’s about the collaborative effort. The quartet will perform well-known jazz standards on occasion, but the focus is primarily on the performance of original compositions. These compositions draw from the group's diverse experiences of the jazz tradition, world music, hard-driving grooves and free-flowing soundscapes.

You may notice a distinct West African influence on Squinobal’s original compositions; this influence comes from his study of traditional West African music as an ethnomusicologist. Squinobal’s music draws on many characteristics of West African music including polyrhythms, rhythmic vamps, and pentatonic melodies, utilizing them in a modern jazz setting. The concert is free admission thanks to a grant provided by the University of Minnesota Morris.
