I am very excited to be working on a realization of Stockhausen's mammoth "Mikrophonie I" for our upcoming electronic music concerts! This is a classic 1960s electro-acoustic work for large amplified gong that is manipulated in a huge variety of ways by four players, plus two more running the sound board. I first heard this work live when I was a graduate student and it blew me away. In fact it takes me all the way back to high school, when I remember vividly the first time I ever saw a large gong up close, and became aware of the many sounds both large and small that it was capable of making.
This is a piece that takes a lot of commitment to do, because the score is very complex, and the pages and pages of instructions (mostly in German!) can be very obtuse. But one of the reasons I wanted to be involved in contemporary music was the chance to really dig into tough and dense scores such as this and bring them to life. No matter how complex the sonic material is, our job is to find a way to make great music out of it, and that's a great challenge to be working on.
