crow with no mouth promotions presents, in his Minnesota debut, the brilliant pianist Reinier van Houdt, performing a Michael Pisaro composition, Green Hour, Grey Future, for piano, sine tones and noise.
Reinier van Houdt studied piano at the Liszt-Akademie in Budapest and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He developed a fascination for matters that escape notation: sound, timing, space, physicality, memory, noise and environment – points where interpretation touches improvisation. Van Houdt acquired himself an unusual repertoire that consistently resulted from personal quests: collaborations with composers and musicians, research in archives, the “composing” and “staging” of musical performances or unorthodox studies of the classics. He has premiered music by Robert Ashley, Alvin Curran, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, Francisco López, Charlemagne Palestine, Yannis Kyriakides, Maria de Alvear, Jerry Hunt, Michael Pisaro and Walter Marchetti; he has also worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Luc Ferrari, Olivier Messiaen and Christian Marclay. Van Houdt plays in Current 93, having recently released an album with contributions by Nick Cave, John Zorn and Antony Hegarty. He is also one of the moving forces behind the experimental music outfit MAE/MAZE. He has performed in such diverse venues as the Knitting Factory New York, San Ildefonso Mexico City, Queen Elizabeth Hall London, DOM in Moscow, Setagaya Gallery Tokyo, Paradiso Amsterdam, Apollohuis Eindhoven, the New Library in Alexandria Egypt, REDCAT in Los Angeles, Mills College Oakland, Music Gallery Toronto, Volksbühne in Berlin and Kunstraum Düsseldorf.
