The 2016-17 season of Jazz At Studio Z kicks off this Saturday, October 29 with saxophonist and composer Aaron Hedenstrom's Quintet featuring pianist Bryan Nichols, guitarist Zacc Harris, bassist Graydon Peterson, and drummer Miguel Hurtado.
The concert features two sets of music starting at 7 p.m. with a master class on Strategies For Improvising on Complex Compositions at 6 p.m. Aaron Hedenstrom has performed across the United States as a jazz saxophonist, clinician, and composer, having written numerous big band works, string arrangements, small group pieces, and chamber works. His collaborations have included saxophonist Bob Reynolds, the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band, vocalist Marlene Verplanck, vocalist Don Most and S. Carey. As a saxophonist, Aaron has been a featured guest artist at University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, Wichita State University and Eastern Washington University. He has performed at top-tier music venues nationwide including the Dakota Jazz Club, Snug Harbor, the Next Generation Jazz Festival, Scat Jazz Lounge, and the Eaux Claires Festival and released his debut album, A Moment of Clarity, in 2014 on Shifting Paradigm Records. Aaron exclusively plays and endorses Keilwerth saxophones. Strategies For Improvising On Complex Compositions: Any jazz player knows that it's a tough task to improvise over complex chord progressions and forms. Aaron Hedenstrom's original compositions present challenging chord progressions in varying time signatures. In this masterclass, Aaron will delve into the process of learning how to understand and play through these challenging musical puzzles and find ways to make each solo expressive and natural.
