A special "Friday Night Jazz in Exile" curated by Steve Kenny is a continuation of over a year of Friday night Jazz performances most recently housed by Reverie Cafe & Bar, and now continued at various outstanding Twin Cities Venues.
The headliner performance is by the NuSkein Ensemble. They are a new project of music, spoken word, visual images and song that features Katherine Pehrson: musician, visual culturalist and writer, Davu Seru: literary scholar, musician; and J. Otis Powell: writer, performance artist, producer, curator. They have come together to create work around the transformations and identity shifts that occur throughout life and which help to produce "new skins" and enlightened consciousnesses. Also embedded in their collaboration is a tradition of creating original works of art from influences and cultural DNA that regards spiritual channeling and improvisation as essential to artistic process. The opening set at 7 p.m. is by The Dakota Combo featuring Jordan Anderson, piano; Adam Astrup, guitar; Alma Engebretson, bass and cello; Yonci Jameson, bass clarinet; Gerhardt Robinson, saxophones; Nick Zaczkowski, alto saxophone; Sam Stroup, drums. The Dakota Combo is coached by Adam Linz and appears on this concert as part of the JazzINK Youth Jazz Showcase presented by Andrea Canter.
