Past and Present
Mar. 31 & April 1, 2017
Studio Z: 275 East Fourth Street, Suite 200, St. Paul 7:30 p.m. |
RenegadeEnsemble presents a concert featuring the music of those living and those who have passed on. One of the most influential composers of the 20th century was John Cage (1912-1992). He was a pioneer of indeterminacy in music, or of leaving an aspect of the composition to chance happening or the performer's discretion. His infamous work 4'33" is performed with the absence of intentional sound, and is rather created from the atmosphere of the performance space (creaking, audience noises, coughs, bird chirps, etc.). In this concert we present two of his works: In a Landcape (1948), which was originally intended to be choreographed for dancer and solo piano but here performed on solo harp, and Litany of a Whale (1980) for two solo voices.
This concert will also feature the world premiere of Joshua Weinberg's song cycle Out of the Sickroom for mezzo-soprano and piano, along with two of his earlier works for flute, clarinet, and piano. Also on the program is Meditations II: Tenderness by Carlisle Evans Peck, Dolce Tormento for solo piccolo by Kaija Saariaho, and Hikari (Light) by Somei Satoh. Tickets can be securely purchased by credit card or through your PayPal account in advance, or by cash, check, or credit card at the door. Tickets purchased online will be held at the door. Tickets are also available at door.
