The Dream Songs Project presents its 3rd annual concert of new music for voice and guitar.
This year, the concert includes the premiere of Randy Bauer's Nature Stories. The piece consists of 6 songs setting the poetry of Jules Renard that each depict an animal or insect (water flies, finch, snail, worm, hedgehog, and nanny goat). The music is clever, humorous, and full of imagery. Also on the program are three pieces that the Dream Songs Project selected from a call-for-scores competition in 2013. Sheila Forrester's Three Campion Songs revive the Renaissance lute song with some modern touches to set texts by Thomas Campion. Ultima Verba by Justin Rubin puts the poetry of last words to music. One Look Too Close is a five movement song cycle by Thomas Schuttenhelm that sets poetry of Theodore Roethke and intersperses songs with guitar instrumental interludes. Also on the program is a lesser known treasure of the 20th Century by the Scottish composer Thea Musgrave, Five Love Songs. The texts are from various Renaissance poets, but the music is definitely not a lute song revival. Since forming in 2010, the dream songs project (Alyssa Anderson, mezzo-soprano; Joseph Spoelstra, guitar) has engaged audiences across the Midwest through performances of a wide range of repertoire spanning from Renaissance lute songs to Romantic arias, 20th century masterpieces, and newly commissioned music. TDSP's artistic mission is to entertain and educate while bringing together performers, audiences, and composers through high quality chamber music concerts.
