Studio Z composer-in-residence Davu Seru hosts and performs in two nights of virtuoso improvised music featuring the return of Charcoal, with Milo Fine and Anthony Cox, and the premiere of a group featuring visiting pianist Thollem McDonas.
Friday, June 15th: Charcoal’s Revenge
For decades, Milo Fine and Anthony Cox have persisted as signature voices of the Twin Cities creative music scene. Both are players who can (but don’t) boast international jazz and free jazz pedigrees that one does not encounter everyday; pedigrees which, for both icons, continue to translate into exceptional bodies of work. In 2003, Milo Fine, Anthony Cox and drummer JT Bates formed the trio Discussion Unit. With Davu Seru replacing J. T. Bates in 2005, the group became Charcoal and, as part of the 2006 Minnesota Sur Seine festival, collaborated with English saxophonist Evan Parker. (Three years after its founding, Charcoal became a quartet with the addition of Stefan Kac; and then, unofficially disbanded in 2011.) Join us for the return of this exciting trio of players with deep expertise, stunning virtuosity and demonstrated commitments to creative improvised music. Saturday, June 16th: Welcome Thollem McDonas
For the past several years itinerant pianist Thollem Mcdonas has traveled to the Twin Cities for solo performances and collaborations with local improvisers as part of his broader artistic and political commitment to egalitarian processes and the pursuit of a more just a rewarding life. Elsewhere these travels have led to Thollem’s developing partnerships with the likes of William Parker, Pauline Oliveros, Nels Cline, Mike Watt, Yuka C Honda, Rob Mazurek and Stefano Scodanibbio. On Saturday, June 16th Thollem will return to Studio Z and be joined by Seru, multi-instrumentalist Elaine Evans and tuba player Benjamin Mansavage-Klein. Tickets can be securely purchased by credit card or through your PayPal account in advance, or by cash, check, or credit card at the door. Tickets purchased online will be held at the door.
