Fresh off the release of the group's debut album, Authentic Midwestern, drummer Lars-Erik Larson's project MANCRUSH will bring its indie rock influenced jazz to Jazz At Studio Z on a special FRIDAY NIGHT installment of the series on June 3.
MANCRUSH is a Twin Cities based band led by drummer and composer Lars-Erik Larson. With Bryan Nichols on keyboard, Brandon Wozniak on tenor saxophone, and Zacc Harris on guitar, MANCRUSH has crafted an intentionally sparse musical landscape in the jazz scenes in St. Paul and Minneapolis. As a composer, Larson attempts to bring a similar musical aesthetic as that of folk music and minimalism into jazz. With simple harmonies, strong melodies, and a commitment to a sparse musical aesthetic, MANCRUSH has quickly become one of the most respected new bands in the twin cities jazz scene. Jazz Police says of the album, “In all there’s some old-fashioned sweet melodies and Old World harmonies here, yet the quartet brings it all together with the drive and invention of modern improvisers. Don’t be fooled by how easy this is to listen to. There are a lot of layers of sound, and art. Maybe that’s what makes this music Authentic Midwestern.” Larson will present a master class at 6p on Unconventional Rhythm Sections, where he will discuss his approach to composing for and playing in the bassless configuration of Mancrush.
