Formerly known as the American Composers Forum’s Tuesday Salon, Composer Nights are an opportunity for composers to present their work, chat with the audience, receive feedback, and connect with others with a passion for musical adventure. These events are friendly, fun, and always surprisingly varied. Come to share, come to ask, come to listen.
Visit newruckus.org/composernights for more information. This Composer Night features music by:
Michelle McQuade Dewhirst presents two pieces on “Found Texts.” ...disillusioned... for solo soprano uses text from a Craigslist Missed Connections posting, while #nofilter, a "spam cycle" for soprano and cello, pulls texts from spam emails. Music will be performed by Courtney Sherman, soprano; and Michael Dewhirst, cello.
Michelle McQuade Dewhirst is a composer, a horn player, an Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, a member of the gypsy jazz group Gypsy Trip, an Iron Composer alum, an avid knitter and a maker of really great ice cream (if she does say so herself). David Grubba presents Revelation Spike, a laptop composition that is part of his ongoing project Paciens Trine. Revelation Spike is made in reverence to the "trumpets of heaven" meme that circulated on youtube and conspiracy blogs in early 2012.
Paciens Trine is an ongoing composition project focusing on the interplay between artifact and performance. Synesthesia, anti-language, and contemplation are focal points. The project is an investigation into the ontologies of sound-arrangement as a medium for life-path empowerment and clarification. The compositions are para-physical devices. Intuition and lack of control (improvisation) are realized with a constant reminiscence on the momentary devices present in the work-process, the performance, and the presentational contexts. Via interrelationship with the devices, the project seeks to elaborate methodologies in sound-organization that enact non-hierarchy within the SOURCE, historical consciousness liberation, and a purging of physical angst. With reference to acupuncture and other direct whole-being therapeutic traditions, Paciens Trine attempts to undermine the imposed dichotomy between the traditions of music therapy and composition. An effort to disregard traditional musical linguistics is made, in order to provide a base of operations for the flourishing of resonance between the subtle threads of modulation, wave-form, pitch, rhythm, narrative, gesture, riff, motif, wander-line, flight-path, life-story, the grape-vine, the Ten Thousand Strings. David Grubba has released several digital recordings in the intrigue of this project, via URL and CD-R, and has been represented by asystems in NYC. He currently co-curates the sound studio and Composition Front Cairn Desk. |
