OBOEBASS!
Carrie Vecchione and Rolf Erdahl of the duo OboeBass! perform two major works from their very varied repertoire.
The Many Faces of Cy DeCosse is a pictures-at–an–exhibition style piece by six composers responding to artworks from a recent Cy DeCosse retrospective exhibition at MCAD. Video clips of Cy describing his artistic process precede each movement. The piece was composed by Randall Davidson, Steven Heitzeg, David Evan Thomas, Sarah Miller, Timothy Goplerud, and Mary Ellen Childs. It was commissioned by Penny and Bill George and the George Family Foundation. A Classical Commissioning Grant from Chamber Music America resulted in Valerie Coleman composing American Veinfor OboeBass! It is a 5 Movement musical road trip across America, celebrating the best things we all have in common. Starting from the redwoods, it travels down route 66, visits the Woodstock of John Cage and Jimi Hendrix, pays homage to immigration and the melting pot at the Statue of Liberty, and ends up at a memorable barn raising in Kentucky. OboeBass! creates experiences that bring people together and capture listeners’ sense of wonder. Oboist Carrie Vecchione and bassist Rolf Erdahl created OboeBass!, a unique duo with a rich portfolio of recitals, recordings, and educational programs. With over 40 premieres, and commissions from Chamber Music America and The Fromm Foundation, OboeBass! partners with a wide range of composers to explore the captivating sounds created by pairing oboe and bass. OboeBass! has performed recitals and residencies across Minnesota as Recipients of Arts Tour Minnesota, Artist Initiative, Next Step, and Arts Learning Grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and MRAC. The duo also presents educational programs linking music and children’s literature for elementary schools and senior residences. They are Roster Artists for The South Dakota Arts Council, and present in-school Young People’s Concert previews for the Minnesota Orchestra’s YPSCA. In venues from Fermi Lab to the Fitzgerald theater, across 19 states and in Norway, audiences describe OboeBass! concerts and educational programs as “inventive, cheeky, informative, and delightful." This concert is produced as part of "Studio Z Presents," a new concert series curated by musicians in our community, thanks to a grant from the City of Saint Paul STAR Program and the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.” Tickets can be securely purchased by credit card or through your PayPal account in advance, or by cash or credit card at the door.
