Episode 8 of the acclaimed Linesmasher performance series reunites Pancake7 guitarist and co-founder Nick Jaffe with two of his favorite collaborators and former band mates from Chicago: singer/poet Talonie Starr, and singer/visual artist Jorge Cuascut. Jorge and Talonie will join P7 for an eclectic, groove-based musical evening titled, QUEST: Beyond the Fishbowl that will feature sets of old, new, and improvised work by the featured artists, a particularly fresh set of P7 material, and some very special surprise guest performers. Jorge and Talonie are highly original song writers, virtuosic vocalists and powerful performers whose work spans a huge range of influences and genres. Projections of Jorge’s stunning paintings and drawings will form a dynamic visual context for the performances.
Jorge Cuascut is usually found dabbling in the musical arts and finds that it often goes hand in hand with the visual. Much like his music, he is drawn to whimsical imagery that speaks to the underdog or to subjects overlooked. For Jorge, rabbit imagery is often used to highlight anxieties shared by all sentient life, while goldfish are reminders to never forget past lessons as well as to think outside of the “bowl.”
Talonie Starr is a Chicago-born native. Her vocal styling is a conglomerate of Bjork, and Sarah Vaughan. She fell in love with music while learning how to balance the needle on her parents' record player.
Talonie Starr emerged from a spoken word artist to find her calling as a vocalist while performing with the band Super Moon. As she puts it: “Singing with those beautiful bunch of weirdos changed my life, and I thank you for it.” Her dream is to push lovers of music past their level of comfort and inspire them to become co-creators in this thing called life. Pancake7 hosts each Linesmasher event and actively collaborates with the featured artists. The band combines the intense, soul-inflected vocals of Sydney Fulton, the modernist/absurdist lyrical sensibilities of poet/vocalist Becca Barniskis, and the idiosyncratic funk-rock guitar stylings of session and touring veteran and producer Nick Jaffe. The band is driven by the deep, hip hop influenced rhythm section of drummer Matt Keseley and bassist Shea Drenkow. P7’s sound draws on broad and deep precedents from post-punk, 70’s and 80’s R&B to avant-garde classical and free jazz. Also hitting the stage with Pancake7 will be Twin Cities’ DJ/producer/multi-instrumentalist, DJ Mickey Breeze.
The goal of Linesmasher is to bring together musicians, poets, emcees, dancers, and other musical and poetic performers and audiences from as wide a range of backgrounds, milieus, and genres as possible to encourage musical and artistic cross-pollination and innovation. Nick Jaffe is a fiscal year 2017 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
