Studio Z Artists in Residence
|
Studio Z is pleased to announce the 2020/2021 Studio Z Artists in Residence. Studio Z's new Artist in Residence program provides space and resources for three BIPOC musicians/ensembles during the 2020-2021 season. This program was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to support the safe creation of new music at a time when music making is challenging. Selected musicians in residence use facilities at Studio Z to rehearse, develop work, livestream, and record new work. The first roster of Studio Z Artists in Residence includes composer Eric M. C. Gonzalez, multi-instrumentalist/composer Meekialle McGee, and 10th Wave Chamber Collective.
While this opportunity is open only to BIPOC musicians, Studio Z is available to rent for recordings, rehearsals, and livestreams for other community musicians at affordable rates. |

Meekialle McGee
Meekialle McGee is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Saint Paul, MN. They currently play keyboards and synth for Twin Cities freak out punk band Alien Book Club. When they’re not performing they’re writing scores for short films, working on noise projects as one half of Neko Sugar Girls, or rehearsing with their mysterious new jazz-punk-noise ensemble that they plan to base this residency around developing.
During their residency, Meekialle will be working on developing a bimonthly contemporary experimental music show at Studio Z, showcasing music from acts in the Twin Cities that specialize in more experimental and aggressive types of music that don’t have a home in the traditional Minnesota avant-garde scene (harsh noise, power electronics, modern free jazz, avant-garde hip hop, etc), as well as working on developing a new small experimental jazz ensemble, Shawty Ensemble, using Studio Z and its resources to rehearse and record their compositions with the ensemble once a week.

During their Studio Z residency, 10th Wave will produce videos for their ongoing series, "Isolation Projects." These videos will feature 10th Wave musicians performing solo or duo pieces they have been working on while staying quarantined during the pandemic. 10th Wave will also present a concert in February 2021 featuring pieces by BIPOC composers such as Elywn Alexander Frasier Jr, Joe W. Moore III, Valerie Coleman, and many more. In Spring 2021, 10th Wave will also collaborate with Spitting Image Collective to present four new commissioned pieces.
