Rimon: The Minnesota Jewish Arts Council will present an artist salon featuring rising performance poet Talia Young at Studio Z this Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. Young will be joined by Rabbi Emma Kippley-Ogman for a lively conversation on ways in which spoken word has become an effective vehicle for social change and on the role of new media in advancing activism. Rimon Executive Director David Jordan Harris interviewed Talia Young for this preview of the event.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
I grew up in California then moved to Minnesota for the weather. When everyone in California asks why I am still in Missouri/Montana/Michigan I tell them I love it here, and I really do. I just graduated from Macalester College in May, where I studied Creative Writing. I am working a bunch of part time jobs this year and trying to figure out how to be an adult.
How did you begin writing and performing?
I experienced a poetry slam for the first time when I was in high school and was forever changed. The poets on the stage were teenagers like me, but they were so powerful and vulnerable in their storytelling. Sitting in the audience, I knew even though it scared me I would one day be on the stage. I was shy and slam gave me a way to share my voice. Slam Poetry has brought me closer to community, to language, and to myself. I started seven years ago and have been writing, performing and teaching poetry ever since.
What pieces will you be performing at the Artist Salon?
I've been working on new pieces for this Salon about what it means to be Jewish, what I inherited from my parents and grandparents, why I'm obsessed with learning Hebrew. I will also perform pieces about the body and illness, love, queerness, and the Bible.
