Michael Wittgraf and Malcolm Lynn Baker join forces for a performance of Improvisations 2013 at Studio Z on Wednesday, September 4. Wittgraf stepped in as guest blogger today to give us a preview of the event.
Improvisations 2013 was first performed in March of 2013 at the University of Denver with Malcolm Lynn Baker on saxophone and me on computer. The music ranges from loop-based to rhythmically amorphous to loud to quiet. The concept is simple: construct electronic sound processing environments with microphone input(s) that a performer can work with, and give a second performer the tools to change those environments in performance, within a free improvisation setting.
The Studio Z performance will be the third time the two of us have performed them. I worry a bit about losing the freshness of improvisation, although since March, the software programming (in Kyma X) has been tweaked. Additionally, Lynn is such a fierce performer that he can't help but explore what each environment can do. Improvisations 2013 will have been performed at the University of North Dakota the evening prior to this one, and will subsequently be performed at the Kyma International Sound Symposium in Brussels, Belgium on September 12. It is hoped that Lynn and I can continue to explore this avenue of work, continuing the series into 2014 and beyond.
