Zeitgeist welcomes song submissions (any type of musical composition) from youth and adult amateur composers throughout the Twin Cities. There are no restrictions on genre or instrumentation. Writing a piano solo? Send it in! Working on a song for your rock band or jazz group? We want to hear it!
Entries are separated into two categories: youth (up to age 17) and adult, and are then adjudicated by an outside panel. In selecting the jury we choose three to four people who represent a diverse range of artistic perspectives, often including a winner from one of the previous contests. Judges will choose 3 songs for Zeitgeist to arrange for their instrumentation of piano, clarinet and 2 percussion. Winning songs will be performed at Zeitgeist's "Playing it Close to Home" concerts Feb. 19-21, 2016. Winners also receive $100 plus a one-year membership to the American Composers Forum. We average 50–70 entries each year, and entrants have ranged from age 4 to 89. In the past, winning compositions have encompassed musical styles ranging from jazz to gospel to high modernist.
